Director of Engineering
Job Description
A well-established manufacturing organization is seeking a Director of Engineering to lead engineering and capital project execution within a complex production environment. This role is responsible for directing engineering teams, managing large-scale projects, and ensuring all initiatives are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in alignment with quality and regulatory standards. The Director of Engineering will play a critical leadership role in driving operational excellence, continuous improvement, and long-term asset reliability across the facility.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide leadership and oversight for engineering and project teams, including planning, development, and execution of capital and improvement initiatives.
- Direct all phases of project delivery, including scope development, budgeting, scheduling, staffing, and contractor coordination.
- Support estimating activities by participating in pre-bid meetings, developing scopes of work, and engaging qualified subcontractors and vendors.
- Oversee design, construction, and commissioning activities while ensuring compliance with internal standards and external regulations.
- Manage relationships with external engineering consultants, environmental firms, and regulatory agencies as required.
- Review and approve bid packages, contract documents, and project-related invoices.
- Monitor project costs and labor utilization; manage change orders and identify opportunities for cost reduction and productivity improvement.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives through standardized engineering processes, performance metrics, and team development.
- Ensure technical accuracy of drawings, specifications, and construction documentation.
- Lead asset management efforts in coordination with finance and operations teams.
- Provide technical guidance to resolve design, construction, or operational challenges.
- Oversee project closeout activities, including as-built documentation, post-project reviews, and final cost reconciliation.
- Communicate effectively with cross-functional stakeholders, including operations, maintenance, finance, and executive leadership.
- Develop and mentor engineering staff while aligning resources to support business objectives.
- Interface with local, state, and federal inspectors and regulatory bodies as needed.
Job Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience within manufacturing or industrial engineering environments.
- Proven experience managing multiple capital projects simultaneously.
- Strong ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documents.
- Experience supporting engineering operations within food, beverage, or similar regulated manufacturing facilities.
- Working knowledge of ammonia refrigeration systems.
- Familiarity with environmental compliance and reporting requirements.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD, Inventor, or similar design tools.
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills.
- Willingness to work occasional weekends and travel on short notice (domestic and international).
- Ability and willingness to relocate to the local area if not currently based nearby.
- Demonstrated ability to lead with integrity and adhere to ethical and safety standards.
